An egg, also called an egg cell or ovum, is the female reproductive cell. They are produced in the ovaries, and during ovulation, an egg cell is released by the ovary and travels through the fallopian tubes to the uterus, and fertilization can occur if sperm is present. After puberty, women have about 300’000 eggs in their ovaries, of which 300 – 400 will ovulate during the reproductive years of a woman.
